The Schoenenbourg Fort is the most heavily bombed structure on the Maginot Line. It is a complete and authentic work, fully equipped with all its original elements. It is fully listed as a "Monument Historiques".
From 14th of May 1940, the fort came under fire from the German artillery, which used a giant 420 mm howitzer that fired 56 shells weighing more than a tonne on the structure. From 20th of June onwards, the German air force bombed the fort seven times, dropping 160 tonnes of bombs on the combat blocks and entrances. The fort took more than 3000 bombs and projectiles of all calibres.

A very nice fort worth visiting. Kind volunteers giving explanations (also in English). Written explanations are also bilangual. A "must go to", even if you are not interested in history
